A weekend in russell
If you have more than a day to spend in Russell, great! You just got yourself some more time to relax, enjoy, drink another wine or beer… and add an activity or 2.
For your first day, we would still recommend all, or most, activities as suggested in our “24hours in Russell” itinerary. And then you got some options!
With so many water-based activities available, you could choose to spend a full day out enjoying the water, the islands, and its wildlife. Book a half day cruise to the Hole in the Rock or join the iconic Cream Trip. The Cream Trip is a full day trip (7 hours), taking you to the Black Rocks and all the way to Marsden Cross (the home of the first Christmas service in NZ), following the original mail delivering route between the islands. A stopover at Urupukapuka Island is included, for lunch and a swim. Or just take the ferry to Urupukakpuka, to spend more time on the island, go for a hike, snorkel… perfect with the kids. The Otehei Bay café is open during summer, offering coffee, lunch, ice cream.
If you are coming to Russell for a hens’ weekend or stags’ do, why not add some adventure… Parasailing, skydiving, 90 minutes on the Xtreme Jet, a jet ski tour. Or some serious mountain biking at the Waitangi Mountain Bike Park. An early fishing trip could help sorting out your dinner plans.
If your aim is to add some romance to your weekend away, we would definitely recommend a relaxing couple’s massage. And for a romantic dinner for two, the Duke of Marlborough. The Gables, or Paroa Bay Winery would be our top3 picks.
Finally, to fully understand NZ’s history and the important role of Russell and the Bay of Islands, a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a must. Included in your entry fee is a guided tour and a cultural performance at the Treaty House. So, count on at least spending a few worthwhile hours here.
