HISTORY & CULTURE

RUSSELL MUSEUM - Whare Taonga o Koroāreka

Sharing the culture and stories of Kororāreka Russell and Īpipiri Bay of Islands with the world. Īpipiri is the Māori name for the Eastern Bay of Islands. To protect, preserve and share the dual heritage taonga and stories relating to Russell Kororāreka and the wider takiwā of Te Rūnanga o Taumarere ki Rakaumangamanga, to inform our shared future.
The museum’s collection is important in promoting New Zealand culture because Russell – then named Kororāreka – lay at the threshold of the earliest connection between the two worlds of Māori and Pākehā. The collection dates from before then and is always being added to.
